Features
The SR9 series, and SR9c specifically, include a lot of features that make them stand above the other
Grip
Even though the Ruger SR9c is smaller and lighter than the SR9, it still retains the same grip width as the bigger gun—however, to be fair, the SR9 had the thinnest double stack grip of any pistol. The slightly larger width grip for a compact pistol is important in the SR9c because it makes the grip easier to hold. The full-sized grip also means that the SR9c accepts most of the full-sized SR9 accessories and magazines. So, if you are an SR9 owner, you don’t have to purchase completely new accessories or magazines for your new SR9c.
Variability is the name of the game with the SR9c’s grip. You can choose between a 10+1 magazine or a larger 17+1. Ruger also has a grip extension for the pistol. All of these options make the SR9c feel and handle less like a compact and more like a full-sized pistol.
Trigger
Ruger has attempted to fix the trigger problems with the full-size SR9 in the SR9c, and some reviewers claim that they were successful.[1] The manufacturer claims that the striker-fired trigger for the SR9c has around a 6 lb. pull, and they have been proven accurate by shooters.[2] As with every trigger, there will be those that dislike the light pull and its reset. However, the lack of take-up in addition to the light pull make this an easy pistol to shoot quickly and accurately, which sets it apart from its compact competition.[3]
Accuracy
All of Ruger’s pistols are accurate firearms. But, keep in mind that the short body of the SR9c means that it is slightly hard to hold and will produce more felt recoil. It may also be harder for people with large hands to hold properly, but there are extended magazines available for purchase.
Although the Ruger SR9c may require some practice to shoot well, its three white dot sights are quite good. They are not tritium night sights. But, still, their low profile and visibility work for the shooter instead of against them.[4]
Safeties
The SR9c includes two manual safeties—the same that can be found on the full-sized SR9. The two safeties are on the front of the trigger and the frame. The frame safety is about the same size and in the same position as Ruger’s SR1911.[5]
If you are someone that does not enjoy manual safeties, you will likely have a problem with the SR9c. However, the multiple manual safeties on the pistol make it safe for even the most novice shooter to use effectively. People of every skill level will need to train to use these safeties, so that you can disengage them without shot in a defensive situation.
